The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to work closely with the six newly elected Area Council chairmen in the Abuja, saying political differences will not hinder development in the capital.
Wike made the commitment on Wednesday when the incoming council leaders visited his office to receive their certificates of return ahead of their June swearing-in.
Congratulating the chairmen, the minister said their victories reflected the confidence of voters and urged them to prepare for the responsibilities of office.
“You have earned this opportunity through hard work, and we are grateful for the chance to serve alongside you,” he told the leaders.
Wike described the working relationship he expects between the FCT Administration and the council officials as a “rainbow coalition,” emphasising the need for collaboration across political divides.
“No matter the party, what is important is that we work together,” he said, noting that his administration has consistently engaged stakeholders regardless of their political affiliations.
According to him, the approach has helped the administration achieve progress in the territory since he assumed office.
The minister also acknowledged that candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu received support from the government during the elections, but stressed that officials from other parties who share the administration’s goals will also be included in governance.
“Candidates who supported Mr President received our support, and we thank God they emerged victorious.
“Even those from other parties who support the President will be part of what we call a rainbow coalition in the FCT,” he said.
Wike urged the incoming council chairmen to prioritise good governance and service delivery when they assume office.
“The support given to you by Mr President means you must reciprocate by giving good governance to the people,” he added.
In the February 21 elections, the All Progressives Congress won five of the six chairmanship seats across the Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory, securing victories in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje.
The Peoples Democratic Party won the remaining chairmanship seat in Gwagwalada.
