Five-time world champions Brazil were forced to settle for a point in their opening Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Morocco delivered an impressive display to earn a 1-1 draw.
The African side made a bright start and stunned Brazil in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari, who finished brilliantly after being played through by Brahim Diaz.
Diaz capitalised on a loose ball in midfield before splitting Brazil’s defence with a perfectly weighted pass that sent Saibari clear. The midfielder remained composed, lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alisson and gave Morocco a deserved early advantage.
Morocco’s energetic and organised performance caused problems for the South Americans throughout the opening stages as they looked determined to build on their reputation as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
But Brazil eventually found inspiration through one of their biggest stars.
Vinicius Junior restored parity in the 32nd minute with a moment of quality, combining neatly with Bruno Guimaraes before cutting inside and curling a superb effort into the top corner.
The goal brought Brazil back into the contest and ensured the teams went into the break level.
Despite opportunities in the second half, neither side was able to find a winner as Morocco remained disciplined defensively while continuing to threaten on the counterattack.
The result means Brazil open their World Cup campaign with a draw, notably the first time Vinicius Junior has scored for the national team without Brazil going on to win the match.
Morocco, meanwhile, will take confidence from a performance that showed both attacking flair and defensive resilience against one of the tournament favourites.
With both nations considered strong contenders in Group C, the draw leaves qualification hopes firmly open heading into their next fixtures.
