What began as online mockery of a graduating student has turned into an unexpected financial breakthrough for Madumere Felix Nwachikerendu, a graduate of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State.
Felix, popularly known on X as @Felix_the_SUG and nicknamed “the Peanut Seller”, became a subject of ridicule on August 31 after photographs of him during his final-year project defence were shared on social media.
The photographs, posted by an X user, @vector_olal, with the caption, “I just did my final year project defense,” attracted widespread attention, with some users mocking Felix’s appearance and the fact that he did not graduate with his set.
But behind the viral photographs was a story of hardship, determination and survival.
An X user, Mercy Ninian, who said she knew Felix, revealed that the History graduate had struggled financially throughout his university journey and had to take up menial jobs to remain in school.
According to her, Felix fetched water, washed clothes for other students, hawked peanuts and other items and, at some point, slept in classrooms because he could not afford accommodation.
Ninian explained that Felix’s financial difficulties began from his first admission into the university, when he was unable to pay his school fees and subsequently struggled academically.
“He wasn’t able to pay his school fees the first time he got admission and couldn’t meet up with the CGPA. The school withdrew him,” she said.
Rather than abandon his education, however, Felix rewrote the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and secured another opportunity to return to the university.
His determination eventually paid off, although it took longer than expected to complete his degree.
Felix himself explained that he was supposed to graduate with his set in 2023 but fell behind because of the challenges he faced.
“You can laugh at the picture, but you don’t know the story behind it. I didn’t graduate with my set in the History Department in 2023 not because I was lazy or unserious, but you chose to make mockery of me. You’re laughing at someone who fell behind but refused to give up,” he wrote.
As more people learnt about his story, the tone of the conversation on social media changed from mockery to sympathy and support.
Popular X user Wisdom Obi-Dickson, also known as Sir Dickson Wizarab, joined the campaign after Mercy Ninian shared details of Felix’s struggles.
Wizarab described Felix as someone deserving of public support and announced an initial donation of ₦100,000.
“Thank you, Mercy. This is someone we can get behind. I would like us to support him going forward. Today might just be his lucky day,” he wrote.
The appeal quickly spread across X, with Nigerians sending money directly to Felix’s account.
Within hours, donations had crossed ₦4 million. As more people joined the campaign, the amount continued to rise, passing ₦5 million and later ₦10 million.
By Thursday, Wizarab announced that Nigerians had collectively raised ₦14 million for Felix.
“What began as a mockery turned out to be a miracle. Thank you for your eternal show of support. Together we raised the sum of N14m for him,” he wrote.
He added that another user, @Skolex5, would assist Felix with financial investment to help him manage and secure the funds.
Felix expressed gratitude to Wizarab and everyone who contributed, promising to make a video to formally appreciate those who supported him.
“Thank you so much sir, I’ll still make a proper video and say a proper thank you,” he wrote.
The graduate has also cautioned people against using his story to spread false information for social media attention.
He specifically denied reports that he had been attacked, saying he was safe and that nobody had visited his home.
“This is fake, I wasn’t attacked and nobody came to my house. Would appreciate you don’t use me or my situation to chase clout,” Felix said.
Reflecting on his journey, Felix said he had promised his late mother that he would remain focused, avoid illegal activities and never bring disgrace to the family.
He said he designed a poster on the day of his sign-out as a tribute to her and to honour the promise he made.
“I did this poster on the day of my sign out as a tribute to my mother whom I promised to never fail, never to do illegal things and never to bring disgrace to,” he wrote.
For Felix, the unexpected financial support has become more than money. He described the development as a reminder of his faith and encouraged others to remain good and upright even when the results of their efforts are not immediately visible.
“Now you reading this post, just be clean and never go against God’s wish. Be good to people. If you don’t see the result now, you will surely see the result later,” he said.
From selling peanuts and doing menial jobs to survive in university, Felix’s story has now taken an extraordinary turn.
A moment that began with strangers laughing at his appearance and delayed graduation has ended with Nigerians rallying behind him and raising ₦14 million to support his next chapter after university.
