The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Seriake Dickson, has said Nigerians will be able to contribute as little as N1,000 or N2,000 to support the party’s campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined the party’s proposed approach to financing its political activities.
According to him, the NDC intends to rely on contributions from ordinary Nigerians rather than wealthy individuals or public funds to finance its campaign.
Dickson described the NDC as the only political party in Nigeria that does not receive funding from the government treasury.
He said allowing wealthy individuals to bankroll political parties could undermine democracy and leave citizens at the mercy of those who finance political activities.
“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed,” he said.
Dickson said the proposed contribution system would give Nigerians an opportunity to take ownership of the party and participate directly in funding its activities.
He added that the NDC’s approach was aimed at reducing the influence of wealthy political financiers and promoting a system where ordinary citizens could contribute according to their means.
