The Global President of the Osun State University Alumni Association, Comrade Abdul-Basit Olokuta, has congratulated the university on its debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
Olokuta described the development as a proud moment for the university’s alumni, noting that UNIOSUN’s emergence as the highest-ranked state-owned university in Nigeria and joint eighth nationally reflected the institution’s progress since its establishment in 2006.
UNIOSUN was placed in the 1,201–1,400 global band, sharing the position with Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The university recorded a score of 25.6 in Research Environment, placing second among ranked Nigerian universities, while it scored 23.6 in Teaching, ranking fifth nationally.
Reacting to the ranking in a statement on Wednesday, Olokuta said the achievement showed that the university was fulfilling the vision of its founding fathers.
“For those of us who passed through this institution, this is a deeply personal moment. On behalf of the UNIOSUN Alumni Association, I congratulate our university community on this remarkable achievement. We are proud to see the university that helped shape our lives earn this recognition,” he said.
He said the founding vision of the institution was to provide young Nigerians with access to quality education, produce graduates capable of competing internationally and contribute meaningfully to society.
According to him, the latest recognition provides evidence of progress towards achieving that vision.
Olokuta also acknowledged the contributions of former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the pioneer Governing Council, management, staff and other stakeholders who laid the foundation for the university.
He equally commended successive administrations and university leaders for sustaining the institution’s development.
The alumni president said the university’s performance in teaching and research was particularly significant, describing researchers, lecturers and other staff as key contributors to the achievement.
He further acknowledged the support of the Osun State Government, Governing Council, Chancellor, benefactors and partners in the university’s development.
Olokuta specifically commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, for his leadership and commitment to the continued growth of the institution.
He urged UNIOSUN alumni in Nigeria and abroad to complement their pride in the university with practical support, including student mentoring, scholarships, professional placements, research partnerships and contributions to teaching and learning facilities.
“Our university’s progress places a responsibility on us as alumni. We must help open doors for those coming after us and bring our experience, professional networks and resources into the service of our alma mater,” he said.
Olokuta said the university’s growing international recognition should be matched by continued efforts to improve students’ experiences and ensure that its work has a positive impact on society.
He congratulated the entire UNIOSUN community on the milestone.
