The Federal Government and leaders of the Organized Labour Unions in the early hours of Monday met and the planned industrial action has been suspended.
The communique was read by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige while the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba commented on it.
Below are the agreement reached
1. The planned strike has been called off by the labour leaders.
2. Price of Petroleum products will remain as the labour agreed to deregulation. This means that fuel will continue to be on rise as international market will determine the price.
3. The parties agreed that the refineries should be rehabilitated before the end of year 2021.
4. The service reflective tariff of the electricity should be put on hold by Distribution Companies.
5. A committee to be headed by the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo should look into the electricity tariff and feed the FG back in two weeks.
6. FG to provide buses in major cities across the country for workers.
7. Federal Government will facilitate the removal of tax on minimum wage as a way of cushioning the impacts of the policy on the lowest vulnerable.
Selfishness of the labour
1. The labour leaders demanded that a sum of money should be set aside as palliatives for Nigerian workers. This means other Nigerians who are not workers have not been put into consideration.
2. The labour leaders want the Act establishing Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission reviewed to pave way for their representative.
3. To ensure commitment and transparency to the processes and timelines of the rehabilitation exercise, the management of NNPC will integrate the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) into the Steering Committee already established by the Corporation.
