As early as 7a.m yesterday, I was already on my way to the University of Ilorin’s Apiary Pen. I had been scheduled to have my GSE practical at the University Apiary(bee) unit; since I had chosen Apiculture as my preferred GSE skill.
It is important to note that I had decided to go for the Bees as a result of my fascination by their didactic activities. These colonies of insects are not only industrious, they are also impressively organised. Their enthralling level of organisation must have informed an English Idiom that goes: ‘make a beeline for (someone or something) which means to go directly and quickly( for someone or something).
In the hive of the bees, laziness is a taboo while orderliness is cherished( Bees are reputed to fly back to their hives in straight lines). Every bee from worker, drone to the queen is always involved in one activity or another.
Interestingly, the Queen Bee that appears to have the least work contrarily holds the existence of the colony. In other words, the absence to the queen Bee from a colony automatically marks the end of such colony.
Equally, the bees save nectar and pollen collected from flowers in their laboriously built comb against rainy days. As a matter of fact, they tirelessly work today so that they may have something to fall back upon as and when needed.
In summation, the life of a bee is aptly captured by the proverb that says: ‘make hay while the sun shines’. If humans could incorporate the bee-like attributes into their lives, maybe things would be better by far.
