The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) second series for private candidates. The results indicate that 48.69% of the candidates that obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, were male candidates, while 51.31% were female candidates. The percentage of candidates in this category was 48.61% in the 2021 WASSCE for private candidates, representing a marginal decrease of 6.45% in performance.
The Head of National Office, WAEC, Yaba, Mr. Patrick Areghan, explained that this analysis cannot be compared with that of the WASSCE for school candidates. While candidates in the WASSCE for school candidates are compelled to sit for eight or nine subjects, candidates in the WASSCE for private candidates examination can register for eight or nine subjects but are not compelled to take all. He noted that the private candidates’ examination is a remedial one for candidates to remedy their existing deficiencies.
According to Mr. Areghan, a total of 77,768 candidates, representing a 31.88% increase compared to the 2021 entry figure, entered the examination, while 73,424 candidates sat for the examination at 638 centers spread across the country. Out of the total candidates that sat for the WASSCE, 36,141 were males, while 37,283 were females, representing 49.22% and 50.78%, respectively. He also noted that provisions were made for the 143 candidates with various degrees of special needs.
WAEC called on candidates that sat for the WASSCE to visit its website to check their results and certificates. The council noted that the examination was conducted in compliance with COVID-19 protocols and congratulated the candidates on their performance.
