Cross River Records High Voter Turnout in National Assembly Elections
Cross River state recorded a high turnout during the National Assembly elections held on Saturday, as citizens came out massively to exercise their voting rights and make their voices heard.
With the results now released, the winners of the National Assembly seats in the state have been announced. In the Senate, Jarigbe Agom of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner of the Cross River North seat. Eteng Jones Williams of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious in the Cross River Central constituency, while Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr., also of the APC, won in Cross River South.
For the House of Representatives, the following candidates were declared winners: Inok Idim of the APC in Calabar Municipal/Odukpani; Emil Iyang, also of the APC, in Akamkpa/Biase; Alex Egbona, again of the APC, in Abi/Yakurr; Victor Abang, also of the APC, in Ikom/Boki; Joseph Bassey, also of the APC, in Bakassi/Akpabuyo/Calabar South; and Mike Etaba, again of the APC, in Obubra/Etung. The only PDP candidate to win a House of Representatives seat was Godwin Offiono, who won in the Ogoja/Yala constituency.
The announcement of the winners has been greeted with mixed reactions from the public, with some celebrating the victory of their preferred candidates while others express disappointment at the outcome of the elections. Nonetheless, the peaceful conduct of the elections and the high turnout of voters are considered a positive development for the state’s democracy.
