The Adewumi Adeyemi Foundation’s “Irekandu Back to School Project” has drawn accolades and prayers from parents and students who have reaped the rewards of the full scholarship package.
Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi, the lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency, on Saturday distributed essential writing materials, learning aids, and cash to no fewer than 70 primary and secondary students in his Constituency.
Starting with only 21 children, the scholarship program has now been extended to a whopping 72 beneficiaries.
During the presentation ceremony, Adeyemi, fondly known as Irekandu, lamented the rising number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, stating that condition is exacerbated by the nation’s economic downturn.
He shared an emotional story about Samuel, a boy who had given up on education but was brought back to the classroom, which inspired the foundation’s initiative.
Wumi Omotosho, a mother whose son is a recipient, shared her family’s financial challenges. “We were contemplating how to tell our eldest he might have to miss school, but now he has this opportunity,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
Another parent, Dupe, described the scholarship program as a “lifeline” for many struggling families. “Irekandu is truly God-sent,” she expressed, revealing how she almost took out a loan to afford basic school necessities for her child.
Students were not left out of the gratitude shower. Omotosho Sunday, a primary six pupil, said, “The textbooks and materials I’ve received will help me academically. God bless Irekandu.” While another student, Ola Christiannah, voiced relief at receiving essential school supplies she so desperately needed.
The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, who was present at the event, commended the legislator’s initiative, emphasizing that such projects underscore the paramount importance of education.
Egbedun remarked, “This project highlights that education is not just a right but a responsibility. It demands genuine commitment to learning.” He concluded by urging other lawmakers and individuals to take a cue from this exemplary act of service.
