Two people feared dead while thirteen vehicles were reportedly burnt during a pre-election violence that erupted in Obot-Akara local government area of Akwa Ibom State.
The vehicles were engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission to convey materials from the state headquarters to INEC office in the LG.
Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr Mike Igini told the newsmen in Uyo, that INEC would not be threatened or influenced by politicians.
“Some of our vehicles that were distributing materials were burnt yesterday and who are those instigating this? Politicians,” he said.
“This is rather unfortunate. Politicians who are the greatest beneficiaries of this democracy have become the greatest threats.
“In Akwa Ibom, equal opportunities will be given to all the political parties.”
Igini said things might have happened in Akwa Ibom in the past elections would not happen under his watch.
“No politician can hijack this election from us. We are neutral and will ensure a level playing ground for all,” he said.
“Our sensitive materials for this election are intact.”
