The presidents of Belarus and Russia are set to celebrate their unity despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. The 1996 treaty aimed at creating a Union State between the two countries serves as the foundation for closer collaboration. Although the idea of a shared currency did not come to fruition, the Union States allowed for a more profound alliance between the two neighboring countries.

As Russia continues to escalate its attacks on Ukraine, Belarus has stood by Russia, cementing their relationship further. In a move that signifies the increasing ties between the two countries, Belarus has agreed to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons. This decision has raised concerns about the potential impact on regional stability.

Belarus had previously expressed interest in fostering relationships with Western nations. However, that changed in 2020 when Russia came to the rescue of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who faced widespread protests against his disputed re-election.

Despite criticism from the international community, Lukashenko has remained steadfast in his support for Russia. This unwavering loyalty has further strengthened the bond between Belarus and Russia, as they celebrate their unity on this day.
