Nigerian students evacuated from warring Sudan back to Nigeria have recounted their horrible experiences while at the Egyptian border waiting to be airlifted.

The students recounted how some females among them were sexually harassed. They also lamented that they became so broke that they started stealing things from shops and running away.

Also, according to them, they had to pay before they could urinate.

According to Vanguard, a returnee female student on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday night said that they faced humiliation and slept in the open.

The female student who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We spent all the money we had. We were so hungry and thirsty. They were harassing us sexually. There was no food, no water to drink. It got to a point we picked things from shops and ran away.”

Similarly, another female student told the BBC Hausa Service in an interview that their legs were swollen due to long hours of stay in the buses that evacuated them from Sudan to the Egyptian border.

Also, a male student lamented that the situation was so bad that they even had to pay before they were allowed to urinate.

He said that he hoped the war would soon end to enable him to return to Sudan, adding that he had only one semester left for him to round off his programme.
