Former US President Donald Trump has become the first ex-president to face criminal prosecution as a grand jury in Manhattan, New York, indicted him.

The charges against Trump have not been made public, but they come after a lengthy investigation into a payment made by his pawyer to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump, who is seeking the White House again in 2024, has dismissed the move as a “witch hunt” and accused his opponents of trying to derail his political aspirations.

This unprecedented indictment has thrown the 2024 presidential election into uncharted territory, as the leading contender for the Republican nomination will be seeking the presidency while facing trial.

Top Republicans have also dismissed the charges as politically motivated.
