The Osun State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has called on farmers, herdsmen and other stakeholders in agricultural sector across the state to strengthen peaceful coexistence among themselves .
The Osun NSCDC made the call on Thursday during a day seminar with leaders of farmers, herdsmen, traditional rulers held at the Ministry of Agriculture Hall, Abere.
The one-day seminar which was a collaboration efforts of NSCDC Agro Ranger Units with the Ministry of Agriculture was targeted in sensitizing herdsmen, farmers across the state to guard against crisis capable of stretching the tiny security thread of our nation.
Speaking, the Osun Commandant of the NSCDC, AbdulKadir Alao Sulu said the agricultural sector in Osun undoubtedly, is facing a plethora of security challenges that are weighing heavily on the developmental efforts of the government at both the federal and state levels.
“Hardly is any region of the federation free from one form of security challenge or the other. Some of the security challenges include terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, robbery, cultism, ritual killings, communal clashes,farmer/ herders conflicts, among others.
“I am delighted on sustaining and ensuring continued peaceful coexistence amongst Farmers, Herdsmen and other stakeholders in the Agricultura sector in the State of Osun Nigeria undoubtedly, is facing a plethora of security challenges that are weighing heavily on the developmental efforts of the government at both the federal and state levels.” Sulu said.
Highlighting some successes recorded by the command under his watch, Sulu said “the Agro Rangers Unit of Osun State Command of NSCDC has maintained a strong relationship with the Chairman, Committee on Peaceful Coexistence between Farmers and Herdsmen in the State of Osun, Alhaji Mudashiru Toogun in the area of finding lasting solution to Farmers/Herders clashes over the years.
“Since the formal inauguration of the Agro Rangers Unit in Osun state, the following have been the unit’s achievements) Settlement of over 400 reported cases of disputes between farmers and Herdsmen from year 2018 till date.
“Financial compensation of Three Million, Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira Only (N3,350,000) have been collected and delivered to farmers and herdsmen whose farmlands and cattle have been destroyed or killed as a result of disputes respectively.
“Mediation on more than one hundred (100) cases between aggrieved farmers whose farmlands have been destroyed and nomadic herdsmen, whOse cattle have been killed or maimed.
“Participation in Osun 2019 Agric Exhibition and Commissioning of First Salar Panel Cold room held at Osun Agric Training School Osogbo.
“Sensitization tour and meetings with all stakeholders in all the area commands comprising all the divisions of the NSCDC, Osun State Commands. During the tour, several responses/grudges were received from Farmers and Herdsmen and acted upon accordingly to forestall crisis between the two parties”.
Stressing the factors militating against the true realisation of the objectives of the Agro Rangers Units of Osun NSCDC boss said Inadequate provision of the required logistics.
“This is the major constraint inhibiting Agro Rangers personnel from satisfactory making a convincing edge in embattling agro-based and other criminal activities For instance,
mobility which is of prime significance is not adequateiy being made available.
The Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Charles Akinola, lauded Osun NSCDC under the leadership of Commandant Sulu for organizing the seminar in sensitizing stakeholders in agricultural sector.
Oyetola who expressed worry over the rising clashes between herdsmen and farmers across some states said the embarrassing crisis needs to be stopped.
He charged leaders of farmers, herdsmen and traditional rulers to collectively operate in a way that the livelihood of herdsmen do not threaten the livelihood of farmers.
He also urged them to strike balance with themselves in terms of interaction and peaceful coexistence form economic benefit for all.
