The Nigerian passport has undergone a significant decrease in its global ranking, dropping 38 places over the past 17 years, as reported by the Henley Passport Index.

The index assesses passports by the number of countries that their holders can enter without a visa or with visa-on-arrival.

Despite gaining access to 11 more destinations, the Nigerian passport fell from its 62nd position in 2006 to 100th in 2022.

Currently, Nigerian passport holders can enter 46 countries without a visa or with visa-on-arrival but need a visa for access to over 181 travel destinations.

Efforts to improve diplomatic relations and modernize visa processes are thought to be contributing factors to this decline in ranking.

Some experts also suggest that internal challenges in Nigeria may be playing a role in the fall.
