At least 80 people have been killed and 140 injured in explosions that rocked Kabul airport, Afghanistan, senior health official have

Two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul’s airport Thursday, transforming a scene of desperation into one of horror in the waning days of an airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover.

At least 12 U.S. service members were among the dead, including 11 Marines and one Navy medic, & 15 injured according to two U.S. officials. Officials warned the toll could grow.

 

The incident underscores the volatility of Afghanistan, but also strengthens our resolve as we continue to deliver urgent assistance to the Afghan people.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has reacted to the development in Afghanistan.

He tweeted, “There have been several terrorist attacks outside #Kabul airport today. I strongly condemn those heinous attacks. My thoughts are with the victims & their loved ones, including those of US servicemen.” @HeikoMaas

“The last #Bundeswehr aircraft flew from #Kabul to #Tashkent tonight. On board were Bundeswehr soldiers & the core team of our Embassy. I am deeply gracious for their tremendous efforts. Over the course of the last days we have evacuated over 5300 people into safety.” @HeikoMaas

“Today marks the end of the military evacuation. But our efforts continue until everyone we bear responsibility for, is safe. For this purpose, we are in close dialog with our partners. I will travel myself on Sunday to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Qatar & Turkey”@HeikoMaas
