A 20-year-old woman was shot and killed in New York State after the car she was in mistakenly drove into Kevin Monahan’s driveway. According to police reports, Monahan, aged 65, opened fire on the car, hitting Kaylin Gillis, who was in the vehicle. Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy has stated that Monahan has “not shown any remorse in this case.” He had already obtained a lawyer by the time he emerged from his home to turn himself over. Monahan was arraigned and charged with second-degree murder.

The town of Hebron is rural, and the driveways are poorly lit at night. The friends drove away from the house and attempted to call for help in a nearby town, but Gillis was pronounced dead by paramedics. The type of bullet that killed Gillis was a large lead slug fired from a 12-gauge shotgun, according to the Times Union newspaper. It is typically used to hunt big game, the newspaper reports. Investigators have not said what weapon was used in the shooting. Gillis’ family called her “a kind, beautiful soul and a ray of light to anyone who was lucky enough to know her.”

The tragedy of the situation is compounded by the fact that Gillis had just graduated from school, and two of her younger siblings attend school in the district. A GoFundMe created to help the family with funeral expenses had raised more than $100,000.
