Manchester United legend Roy Keane has hit back at Virgil van Dijk after the defender claimed only Liverpool “tried to win the game” on Sunday.

High-flying Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by United in a crucial Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday. While the Reds were the more dominant side, they failed to breach the Red Devils’ defence even once during the 90 minutes.

After the game Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk told reporters, “There was only one team trying to win the game but unfortunately it did not happen. We were superior in all aspects, they were hoping to hurt us on the counter and they are buzzing with a point.”

Responding to the Liverpool defender’s comment on United’s intent, club legend Roy Keane said on Sky Sports, “There’s a lot of arrogance coming out of him, dissing Manchester United like that. He needs reminding that he is playing for a club that has won one title in thirty-odd years.

“He said Manchester United were buzzing and one team came to play. Yeah, I’ve come to Anfield many times with Manchester United where Liverpool were in a tough place and were happy with a draw. The bottom line is that the most important stat is the scoreline. Liverpool had chances and didn’t take them. That’s their own fault.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side came into the game sitting at the top of the league but Sunday’s draw meant that Arsenal reclaimed their position at the summit. Erik ten Hag’s side, on the other hand, got some respite after back-to-back defeats at Old Trafford at the hands of Bournemouth and Bayern Munich.

The Merseyside club will now prepare to take on the in-form Gunners in a very important Premier League fixture at Anfield on December 23.
