Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez criticised his team for failing to convert chances following their 1-1 draw with Valencia on Saturday.

After losing their previous two games in all competitions, the Blaugrana took on Valencia at the Mestalla in La Liga. They were defeated 3-2 by Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League after losing 4-2 to Girona in the league. They hoped to bounce back on Saturday but failed to register a win against Los Che. Barcelona have produced numerous amazing opportunities during the season, but very few of them have turned into goals.

“We deserved to win, we did everything. What happened over the past weeks with regard to effectiveness was repeated,” said Xavi speaking about the game. “This match pretty much summarises the season for us. We train finishing but it depends on the players’ confidence.

“We have to be one of the teams with the worst finishing in Europe. I am very frustrated today.”

Against Valencia, Barcelona had 16 shots, eight of which were on target, compared to four for their opponents on 11 efforts. In their previous three games in all competitions, Barca have attempted 58 times, 22 of which have been on target and have resulted in five goals. As per OptaJose, Barca are now the side with the most big chances missed (41) in Europe’s top five leagues.

Xavi’s job is now very much on the line as a Girona win on Monday, December 18 against Alaves would put Barca nine points off the lead. The Catalans will take on last-placed Almeria on Wednesday, December 20 as they look to make a return to winning ways.
