The Russian authorities have arrested Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, on espionage charges. Gershkovich, who has been based in Moscow since 2016, was detained by Russian security forces on Friday, accused of working for a foreign intelligence agency.
The Wall Street Journal has vigorously denied the charges, calling them “baseless and outrageous.” Gershkovich’s arrest has raised concerns about press freedom in Russia and has been condemned by the Committee to Protect Journalists and other media organizations.
