US pop star Aaron Carter, younger brother of Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys, died from accidental drowning caused by drugs, according to a coroner’s report. The autopsy revealed that Carter had taken sedatives and inhaled difluoroethane, a gas commonly used as a propellant in air spray cleaners that can induce euphoria when inhaled. The report also found the presence of alprazolam, sold under the brand name Xanax, in his system. Prescription bottles and cans of an electronic duster that he had used for inhaling were found by investigators at the scene.
Carter, who started his career opening for the Backstreet Boys, sold millions of copies of his four albums during the late 90s and early noughties, with his second album, Aaron’s Party (Come Get It), released in 2000, going triple platinum. As he grew older, he transitioned into rap and also appeared in Broadway musicals and on the US TV show Dancing With The Stars. However, he also faced several struggles and run-ins with the law over drug possession, reckless driving, and millions of dollars of debt, much of it tax-related.
Carter’s son Prince was born in 2021, and he reportedly checked into rehab last year to gain custody of him. After his death, many paid tribute to Carter, including Paris Hilton, Tyler Hilton and Hilary Duff, and bands New Kids on the Block and *NSYNC.
The tragic death of Aaron Carter highlights the dangers of drug use and the importance of seeking help for addiction. It is a reminder that even those who seem to have it all can struggle with mental health and substance abuse issues, and that help and support should be readily available to all who need it.
