Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected as the President of the 10th Senate.

Akpabio defeated his rival and former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari in a keenly contested elections on Tuesday.

The former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs polled 63 votes to defeat Yari, who had 46 votes.

Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambawal announced Akpabio after the polls witnessed by Governors of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde; Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Imo, Hope Uzodinma.

Akpabio was nominated by Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South, while Elisha Abbo of Adamawa North nominated Yari.
