Former Super Eagles manager and current coach of the Benin national football team, Gernot Rohr, has spoken about some of his bizarre experiences as a European tactician in Africa.

The Franco-German tactician, in a recent interview with FCBayern(dot)Com, said: “In my first game with Benin against Rwanda, the ball just wouldn’t go in. Suddenly, a fan ran onto the pitch, grabbed the goalkeeper’s white towel, and disappeared with it. My assistant explained to me that the towel had bewitched us. And sure enough, five minutes later, we scored the equaliser.”

The former Bordeaux defender’s other bizarre experience was during his time in Nigeria.

“Two years ago in Nigeria, suddenly the Minister of Sports turned up at training with 40 to 50 journalists and wanted to join in the football. I was perplexed. My assistant said we had to let him join in; otherwise, we’d all be gone tomorrow. Without further ado, we added a circle game for him, and everything was fine,” he recounted.
