A worldwide effort has been launched to locate one of the most iconic instruments in music history: Paul McCartney’s original Höfner bass guitar.

Dubbed “The Lost Bass Project,” this initiative is appealing to the public for any information about what is being described as “the most important bass in history.”

In 1961, McCartney acquired this legendary instrument for a mere £30 ($38) in Hamburg, Germany. However, it mysteriously vanished eight years later.

This bass guitar played a pivotal role in The Beatles’ music during those years, gracing hits like “Love Me Do” and “She Loves You.”

Leading the search for the missing Höfner is Nick Wass, who has teamed up with two journalists to unravel what has been called the “greatest mystery in the history of rock and roll.”

Wass has a deep connection with McCartney, having collaborated extensively with him and even written a book on the subject of the missing Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass.

According to Wass, the quest to locate the guitar began when McCartney himself inquired about it during a recent conversation.

The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of this instrument remain shrouded in uncertainty. It appears to have been stored away, presumably after The Beatles concluded filming for “Get Back” in 1969.

“It’s not clear where it was stored, who might have been there,” Wass remarked, emphasizing the profound impact this bass had on The Beatles’ sound.
