Detective Constable Stephen Hardy of the Greater Manchester Police was handed a 26-year sentence for sexually abusing a teenage girl, as reported by Sky News.

Convicted on 20 charges, including six counts of rape at Liverpool Crown Court, Hardy’s actions deeply traumatized the victim, who now fears authority and distrusts law enforcement.

Despite the brave step of reporting the abuse, the victim remarked on the lasting emotional toll: “I continue to be wary of those in power. His role within the police force deeply wounded me.”

In his sentencing, Judge Robert Trevor-Jones characterized Hardy’s behavior as manipulative, describing him as treating his victim like a “plaything.” The judge noted, “Your lack of remorse is evident.” He expressed distress that Hardy, being familiar with the lasting scars left on rape survivors, still chose to commit these acts.

Prosecutor Vanessa Thomson depicted Hardy as domineering and deceitful. In defense, Laura Nash mentioned Hardy’s denial of the charges and anticipated challenges in prison due to his profession.

Following the July conviction, GMP suspended Hardy, pending further disciplinary action, as declared by Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen. Detective Sergeant Abigail Thomas of the GMP emphasized that Hardy’s atrocious acts contradict police values and ensured that misuse of power within the force would be strictly dealt with.
