In a heartbreaking incident at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, the university community is reeling from the loss of Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated Veterinary Technologist, who was fatally attacked by a 9-year-old lion in the zoological garden.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, conveyed the profound impact of Mr. Olawuyi’s passing, stating, “The management, staff, students and the entire campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been thrown into mourning following the untimely death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi.”

Narrating the oevent, Mr. Olarewaju shared, “The other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.”

Witnessing the unfolding tragedy firsthand, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was profoundly affected, as detailed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, who explained, “On arrival, the Vice-Chancellor was informed that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.”

In response to the loss, the Vice-Chancellor took decisive action, ordering the killing  of the lion responsible for the fatal attack. Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE emphasized the university’s commitment to understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating, “I have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.”

Acknowledging the dedication of Mr. Olawuyi to the care of the animals, the university management expressed deep condolences to his family. “The male Lion killed the man who had been feeding them” noted the spokesperson for the university, highlighting the tragic irony of the situation.

As the campus community struggle with the profound loss of a valued colleague, the university management extends support and comfort to the family of the deceased. “The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life,” shared the official university statement.

In the wake of this devastating event, the campus mourns the loss of Mr. Olawuyi and reflects on his dedicated service while seeking solace in unity during this challenging time.
