The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reaffirmed that its employment, promotions, appointments, and leadership movements are determined by merit, business requirements, and expertise, rather than ethnicity, tribe, religion, or political affiliations.
Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO) of NNPC Ltd, addressed recent concerns raised in Farooq Kperogi’s article, Tinubu’s Buharisation of the NNPC, emphasizing the company’s commitment to professionalism. According to Soneye, “Employment and appointments at NNPC are strictly guided by merit and expertise to ensure that only the most qualified individuals occupy critical positions.
This merit-based approach underpins the company’s efficient service delivery and exceptional performance.”
Soneye highlighted NNPC’s status as a professional organization with a leadership team that reflects global diversity. He stated that the presence of qualified foreign professionals within NNPC strengthens its production and distribution value chain, further demonstrating the company’s focus on competence over ethnicity.
He criticized Kperogi’s claims as “a red herring” aimed at undermining President Tinubu’s leadership, which has upheld NNPC’s operational independence and work ethic.
“Under Mele Kyari’s leadership, NNPC has achieved unprecedented milestones, including advancements in exploration, production, and international partnerships, driven by excellence rather than tribal or religious affiliations,” Soneye noted.
Soneye also addressed claims about President Tinubu’s alleged interference in NNPC operations, stating, “President Tinubu has introduced transformative policies that have enhanced the oil and gas sector and the Nigerian economy. His administration empowers institutions like NNPC to operate independently, fostering growth and innovation.”
He added that these reforms have surpassed the achievements of previous administrations, setting a benchmark for excellence.
While expressing disappointment in Kperogi’s divisive narrative, Soneye extended an open invitation for him to visit NNPC and witness the company’s professionalism and dedication firsthand.
Reaffirming NNPC’s mission, Soneye concluded, “NNPC remains committed to fostering unity, embracing diversity, and upholding meritocracy.
By staying true to these principles, we aim to strengthen national cohesion and position Nigeria as a global energy leader.”
He urged stakeholders to focus on facts and evidence in their assessments, emphasizing that constructive discourse is vital for the nation’s progress.
