The Nigerian Army has inaugurated the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park in Jos, Plateau State, in honor of Mariya Lagbaja, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA).
The unveiling ceremony was conducted on Saturday by Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN.
A statement released on Sunday via the Nigerian Army’s website described the park as a testament to Mariya Lagbaja’s significant contributions to the welfare of officers, soldiers, and their families, particularly within the 3 Division. Situated within the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, the park features an array of amenities aimed at improving the barracks community’s quality of life.
Facilities at the park include a modern swimming pool, a 5-a-side synthetic football pitch, and various recreational options such as trampolines, bouncy castles, electric merry-go-round trains, bicycles, swings, and battery-powered bikes. The park is equipped with floodlights, enabling day-and-night use for families.
During the event, Major General Abubakar paid tribute to the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, stating that the facility honors his commitment to community and welfare.
“We remember General Lagbaja not only for his service but for his belief in the importance of community and welfare. This facility serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy,” he remarked.
He emphasized the park’s role in fostering community cohesion, promoting physical activity, and offering relaxation for soldiers and their families.
“This park is more than a recreational space; it is a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance the well-being of our soldiers and their loved ones. I encourage everyone to utilize this facility fully and create lasting memories here,” he added.
Major General Abubakar also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. OO Oluyede, for supporting the initiative, noting, “Today’s success is the result of collaborative efforts dedicated to improving the lives of our troops and their families.”
The unveiling ceremony included a guided tour of the park, the launch of its recreational equipment, and a novelty football match between teams from NAOWA and NASWA, making it a memorable day for the community.
