A tragedy was narrowly avoided on New Year’s Eve in Edo State when a 55-year-old man, Osaro Ahunwan, allegedly set his estranged wife’s house on fire.

The incident occurred in Idumwonwina, near Oluku, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.

The victim, 54-year-old Tina Uyi, an Italy-based businesswoman, had returned to Nigeria on December 31, 2024, to celebrate the New Year with her family.

Eyewitnesses reported that Osaro arrived at Tina’s residence but was denied entry. In response, he allegedly poured petrol around the building and set it ablaze.

According to a source, “Tina heard a loud bang on her window while coming out of the bathroom but refused to let Osaro in.” Tina had reportedly ended the marriage after her family returned the bride price in April 2024.

The fire consumed the entire property, destroying valuables worth millions, including cash in local and foreign currencies. Neighbors managed to rescue Tina’s elderly parents, while the Edo State Fire Service contained the flames.

Tina, however, sustained third-degree burns and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Benin.

From her hospital bed, Tina recounted the turbulent relationship with her estranged husband.

“Osaro destroyed my Lexus (330) Jeep during a previous misunderstanding. He is controlling and overly suspicious. He would call me names if he heard a male voice while I was out shopping,” she said.

She explained that she ended the marriage after less than two years due to Osaro’s violent and overbearing behavior. “He had threatened to kill me and himself back in 2023,” she added.

The police in Ekiadolor have arrested Osaro and Tina’s elder brother, Odaro Oviarobo, also known as “OD,” for their alleged roles in the incident.

During interrogation, Osaro reportedly confessed that Odaro provided him with detailed information about Tina’s return to Nigeria.

Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident but stated that further details from the Divisional Police Officer in Ekiadolor were pending. Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
