Omowunmi, the widow of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has accused her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba, of avoiding a DNA test to resolve the paternity dispute over the child she had with Mohbad.
The dispute had been brought before the Magistrates Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where, on July 9, 2024, the court encouraged both parties to pursue alternative dispute resolution. However, their negotiations failed to reach an agreement.
Joseph Aloba had filed a suit requesting a DNA test to confirm the paternity of his grandson. In October 2024, a representative from the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, stated that Omowunmi had agreed to the DNA test.
Subsequently, both parties reached a settlement, and the court ordered the test to be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon Nigerian laboratory, with court-appointed officers overseeing the process to ensure its integrity.
However, in a letter from Omowunmi’s legal team, Salawu Akingbolu Chambers, dated January 9, 2025, Omowunmi revealed that she had rejected Mohbad’s father’s choice of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, while he also dismissed her suggestion of Lagoon Hospitals.
Instead, Omowunmi proposed Eko Hospital and Reddington Hospitals as transparent alternatives, as stated in their December 11, 2024 letter. Despite this, she claimed that Mohbad’s father did not respond.
The letter further expressed frustration over what Omowunmi saw as a misrepresentation, with Mohbad’s lawyer, Taiwo Odumosu, allegedly stating on social media that Omowunmi was unwilling to undergo the DNA test.
She rejected these claims and demanded an apology, emphasizing that she was ready for the test.
Omowunmi also condemned Mohbad’s father for allegedly defaming her son on social media, labeling him as a “bastard.” She described this as unacceptable and ironic, particularly as the court had previously ordered the DNA test, which Mohbad’s father seemed to be avoiding.
In her letter, Omowunmi threatened to independently carry out the DNA test if delays continued. “If your client continues with this procrastination and opts for social media rhetoric, we will be left with no choice but to conduct the test ourselves and make the results public,” the letter stated.
In response, a letter dated January 11, 2025, from Hillceetee Partners, representing Mohbad’s father, denied the allegations. The letter, signed by Emmanuel Oroko, clarified that Taiwo Odumosu had not stated that Omowunmi was unwilling to proceed with the DNA test.
Instead, Odumosu had mentioned that the hospitals had not confirmed their readiness for the test, a statement that had been misinterpreted.
The letter also announced that the law firm would no longer represent Joseph Aloba in the case.
“We are issuing this response to clarify matters and respectfully inform you that our chambers no longer represent the Applicant,” the letter concluded.
