Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed accusations that he converted Rivers State’s resources into his personal estate during his tenure as Governor.

These allegations, attributed to former Governor Dr. Peter Odili, were refuted by Wike during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Wike described the allegations as baseless, emphasizing that none of his children held political appointments during his time in office.

“Those making these claims have their children serving as commissioners. Is any of my children a commissioner? I never converted the state into my personal estate,” he declared.

He further accused political figures, including Dr. Abiye Sekibo, Prince Uche Secondus, and former Deputy Speaker Austin Okpara, of opposing Siminalayi Fubara’s emergence as Governor.

Wike stated, “Those parading themselves as elders today were the same people who fought against Fubara’s candidacy. I stood my ground, and now they call themselves elders.”

Reflecting on his political career, Wike highlighted his consistent electoral victories since 1999 when he first contested for the chairmanship of Obio/Akpor Local Government.

“I have been winning every election I contest because we understand the dynamics of the game,” he noted.

He also recounted his pivotal role in securing the reelection of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. Wike revealed, “Despite battling an ulcer, I went to Edo State to ensure Obaseki won. I faced threats from the police and even abandoned my car to avoid trouble. Yet, Obaseki later turned against us.”

In a subtle appeal to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Wike urged him to maintain loyalty to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the former Edo Governor, to avoid repeating Obaseki’s actions.

Wike expressed confidence in his current position, boasting about his influence and support from the presidency. “People are unhappy because we have the presidential endorsement. I have a budget to present to the National Assembly, and I award contracts. I have nothing to lose,” he asserted.

He hinted at a major political shift in Rivers State, urging his loyalists to remain steadfast. “People will be shocked by the movement that will soon happen in this state. Stay loyal, and we will overcome,” he said.

Wike also called on Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through prayers, assuring them of a brighter future. “With what Mr. President is doing, 2025 will be better. Let’s keep praying for him,” he added.

The event, attended by prominent figures like Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and Chief OCJ Okocha, featured speeches from various dignitaries. Senator Magnus Abe’s blunt remarks stood out, as he addressed the political realities in Rivers State.

“Politicians pursue their interests, and that’s the truth,” Abe said. He highlighted instances of anti-party activities, pointing fingers at Wike, Fubara, and others for prioritizing their political goals over party loyalty.

“Those supporting Fubara today are doing so because he is Governor. If he weren’t, they wouldn’t be there,” Abe stated.

The gathering ended with pledges of loyalty to Wike and discussions on the political future of Rivers State, marking yet another chapter in the state’s dynamic political landscape.
