Veteran Nigerian actor Chiwetalu Agu has advised singles to thoroughly vet their potential partners before making the decision to marry. In a viral Instagram video, Agu cautioned against rushing into marriage due to peer pressure or desperation.
He stressed that marriage should not be viewed as a do-or-die commitment and urged those in toxic or abusive relationships to seek help or leave for their own safety.
“Marriage is not a matter of life and death. If you’re in an abusive or toxic relationship, run for your life. If you’re unhappy in your marriage, get help or leave,” Agu said.
He also warned against staying in unhealthy marriages for the sake of children or financial security, highlighting the risks involved.
“Divorce is better than rest in peace. If you’re staying because of your children or wealth, remember that’s how some women have ended up dead at the hands of their husbands. Who will care for the children then? Is it the husband who killed you, or the relatives who are focused on their own families?”
Agu strongly advised individuals to do proper background checks before making any commitment, stressing that decisions based purely on physical attraction or social pressures could have dire consequences.
“Always conduct background checks before deciding to marry someone. Just because someone is beautiful or handsome doesn’t mean you should marry them at all costs. Peer pressure or the need to ‘fit in’ is not worth it,” he cautioned.
He concluded with a heartfelt prayer, wishing that people would avoid making life-altering mistakes in the name of marriage.
