The national leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has instructed local government workers in Osun State to return to work following a judgment by the Court of Appeal.
This comes after the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission held a fresh election on February 22, 2025, where candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious as chairmen and councillors.
However, both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have claimed control over the local councils.
On February 10, 2025, the Court of Appeal ruled to reinstate the 30 APC-elected council chairmen. In response, ALGON issued a letter on March 17, 2025, signed by Acting Director-General Evan Enekwe, affirming support for the APC chairmen in Osun State. The letter was sent following a request by Hon. Samuel Idowu, the Osun State ALGON Chairman, for national intervention.
ALGON President Bello Lawal emphasized the legitimacy of the APC-led executive, reiterating the association’s commitment to upholding the rule of law following the court’s decision.
The letter further pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to ensure that Osun’s local government workers resume their duties.
The letter also called for caution and maturity in handling the situation and condemned the violence that led to the death of Hon. Abbas, extending condolences to his family.
ALGON reassured its members of continued support to maintain stability in Osun’s local government administration.
