Nigerians living in the United Kingdom have openly declared their support for President Bola Tinubu, describing his ongoing visit as both historic and significant for the country’s future.
In interviews with News Central TV on Wednesday, members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK expressed pride and optimism, noting that the visit marks a rare and important moment in Nigeria’s diplomatic history.
Dr Mary Mena, founder of Women Our Voice Our Vote, said the occasion was particularly special, recalling that the last time a Nigerian President paid a state visit to the UK was nearly four decades ago.
“There is no day quite like this,” she said. “It has been about 37 years since we last witnessed such a visit. We are here to show our love and support for our President and his Renewed Hope Agenda. For many people, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
She also extended support to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, praising the administration’s efforts so far.
The group’s National Coordinator, Judy Bonart, added that their organisation remains committed to supporting the President, noting that their presence was meant to demonstrate confidence in his leadership and inspire others to do the same.
“We are here to show that we believe in him,” she said. “As a group focused on empowering women, we want the President to see our support and encourage others to stand behind him.”
Another UK-based Nigerian, Taiwo Aiyedun, described the visit as a strategic move that could benefit Nigeria, especially in areas such as development, security, and economic growth.
According to him, engaging with global powers is essential for tackling Nigeria’s internal challenges. He also urged critics of the visit to adopt a more constructive approach.
“The President is not here for leisure,” he said. “This visit is about building relationships that can help address security issues and drive development back home. Critics should focus on meaningful contributions rather than sentiments.”
Earlier reports confirmed that President Tinubu and the First Lady were received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle.
The visit is Nigeria’s first state visit to the United Kingdom in nearly 40 years and is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
