Nollywood actress Monalisa Chinda-Coker has raised concerns about the underrepresentation of Nigerian women in the art industry, calling it both “unfortunate and disheartening.”

Known as Lisa among her colleagues and fans, the actress expressed her frustration over the lack of visibility for Nigerian women in art, particularly in museums and galleries.

Despite the growing number of female artists, she noted that they are not receiving fair representation, both in terms of visibility and financial rewards. She is advocating for greater awareness of this issue to bring about meaningful change.

In a WhatsApp conversation with our reporter, the actress, who is also a mother, proposed the idea of organizing art exhibitions and workshops specifically for female artists across Nigeria to provide them with more opportunities and promote their work.

“I’m uncertain about the future for women in the arts, but let’s see how things progress moving forward,” she remarked.
