The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has lauded the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, for approving a N500,000 bursary for final-year indigenes of the state studying Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation.

A statement issued by NANS Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Felicia, on Sunday highlighted the approval.

It was reported that final-year students from Oyo State studying Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation at tertiary institutions across the country would each receive N500,000. Additionally, final-year students in other courses will receive N100,000.

Akinbodunse praised the governor’s decision, calling it “humane and commendable.” She emphasized that the bursaries would help reduce financial pressures for both students and their families, especially given the current economic challenges in Nigeria.

She also noted that the bursary initiative would encourage more students to pursue academic careers in medicine, maritime, and aviation fields. Furthermore, the Oyo State government’s development of a cloudware platform to register all state-based tertiary students is expected to ensure that more eligible students benefit from these awards.

Akinbodunse described the bursary approval as a valuable addition to the various educational interventions already benefiting Oyo State students under Governor Makinde’s leadership. She urged the governor to continue prioritizing educational development in the state.

Additionally, NANS called on other state governors to follow Makinde’s example by ensuring the regular payment of bursaries and adjusting the amounts to meet the current economic realities..
