The South-West zone of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has called on the Federal Government to roll back the recent hike in telecommunication tariffs.
The student organization warned of widespread protests across the region if the government and relevant stakeholders fail to address the matter.
In addition to the telecom tariff hike, NAUS highlighted growing concerns about escalating insecurity on university campuses, inconsistent power supply, and ongoing strikes that are negatively impacting the academic experience. These concerns were raised at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday.
Tiamiyu Olayinka, the National Vice President of NAUS (South-West), stressed that the increased telecom tariffs are severely hindering students’ ability to access affordable internet for virtual learning, research, assignment submission, and participation in online discussions. These disruptions, he noted, are compromising students’ academic progress.
“The government must take immediate action to reverse this tariff hike. If not, we will be forced to mobilize students throughout the South-West to take bold action in defense of our rights and to secure a better academic environment,” the statement warned.
This call for action comes as students continue to demand improvements in conditions essential for their education and overall well-being.
