In a significant move to curb corruption and enhance accountability, a bill to remove immunity from the vice president, governors, and their deputies has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

This development is part of a broader effort to amend the Nigerian Constitution, with 42 bills passing the second reading stage on Wednesday.

 

The proposed legislation aims to qualify the immunity conferred on the president while removing it for the vice president, governors, and their deputies.

This change seeks to prevent public officials from abusing their power and promote transparency in governance.

A bill to distinguish the roles of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, as well as their state-level counterparts.

A bill granting citizenship rights to spouses of women from Nigeria and specifying the minimum number of youths and women to be appointed to specific offices.

Bills proposing the creation of Ijebu State, Ife-Ijesa State, Tiga State, Orlu State, and Etiti State.

 

These bills bring the total number of constitutional amendment proposals passed through second reading to 81. While the bills were not debated, they mark a significant step towards reforming Nigeria’s governance structure.
