Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has declared his intention to spearhead a broad political coalition aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

In a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account following a meeting with a group of National Opinion Leaders, Atiku stressed the need for a united front to restore good governance.

He described the coalition as a “fast-moving train with multiple stops,” suggesting an inclusive alliance that cuts across party lines.

His announcement follows a recent gathering of PDP governors in Ibadan, where they distanced themselves from any formal merger talks.

While reaffirming the party’s unity, the governors emphasized they were not pursuing a coalition at this time, though they remain open to welcoming new members.

Undeterred, Atiku called on Nigerians to embrace a “new path,” or Sabuwar Tafiya in Hausa. He revealed that discussions are underway with key figures from the APC, PDP, Labour Party, and other parties to build a platform focused on national transformation.

“This is not just about winning elections,” Atiku said. “Whatever vehicle can deliver good governance for the future of our children and grandchildren, that’s the one we will take.”

He also addressed the youth directly, urging them to reject vote-buying and focus on long-term progress. “Don’t let a few pennies today steal your future,” he warned.

Momentum for the coalition has grown following Atiku’s recent meeting with former President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside Labour Party’s Dr. Yunusa Tanko and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, now with the SDP.

As the race for 2027 begins to take shape, Atiku’s push for a grand alliance signals a possible realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Still, with the PDP leadership remaining cautious, it remains to be seen whether the broader opposition can find common ground.
