Air Peace has announced the suspension of all flights to Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, citing the deteriorating condition of the airport’s infrastructure, which poses significant safety concerns.
The airline pointed out issues with the airport’s runway that have severely impacted its operations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Air Peace explained that the situation at the Enugu airport had become untenable, with the runway’s condition no longer manageable. The airline has urged relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the problem.
Air Peace emphasized that passenger safety is its top priority, and the temporary suspension of flights will allow the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) the necessary time to conduct repairs. As a result, all flights to and from Enugu will be diverted to Asaba, Delta State.
The airline expressed regret over any inconvenience this change may cause and reassured passengers that the decision was made solely for safety reasons.
This development comes amid rising concerns in the Nigerian aviation industry about the poor state of airport infrastructure. Many industry stakeholders have cited runway defects as a major cause of the numerous runway incursions reported in 2024.
Earlier in January, FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, acknowledged that many of the nation’s airport runways have exceeded their expected lifespan.
She noted that the rehabilitation of 17 runways, along with other infrastructure improvements, was included in this year’s budget, with an estimated N580 billion required for repairs across the country.
