Bulama Bukarti, a security analyst and senior fellow at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, has issued a warning about Boko Haram’s expanding digital footprint, particularly on TikTok.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Bukarti highlighted that the terrorist group is now using the platform to push its extremist ideology and engage with followers.
He explained that Boko Haram members are hosting live sessions in Hausa, where they defend their violent actions and interact with viewers through comments and Q&A segments.
“They’ve turned TikTok into a propaganda tool,” Bukarti said. “Just this week, one member shared a 10-minute video threatening me for speaking out against their violence.”
In addition, Bukarti revealed that Boko Haram has begun using unmanned drones for surveillance operations, mainly to monitor military bases in northeastern Nigeria.
“Over the past three months, they’ve launched attacks on more than seven military super camps, including one in Sabon Gari. They overpowered soldiers, looted supplies, and seized weapons.”
His comments come shortly after Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South reported that Boko Haram fighters have killed around 100 soldiers and 280 civilians over the past six months.
