The artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, which created ChatGPT, has raised $40 billion in fresh capital to expand its computing infrastructure, improve its technological products, and further AI research.
OpenAI disclosed the information in a blog post on Monday, stating that the business is valued at $300 billion after fundraising.
With an emphasis on scientific research, individualised instruction, and fostering human creativity, the investment will support OpenAI in pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence.
“Today we’re announcing new funding—$40 billion at a $300bn post-money valuation, which enables us to push the frontiers of AI research even further, scale our compute infrastructure, and deliver increasingly powerful tools for the 500 million people who use ChatGPT every week,” the AI startup said.
SoftBank Group is among the key investors in the round. “Few companies understand how to scale transformative technology like SoftBank,” OpenAI stated.
The company noted that the partnership will support its long-term goal of developing artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
The funding announcement comes barely a week after OpenAI introduced a major update to ChatGPT, integrating image generation directly into the chatbot.
The Microsoft-backed firm described the update, which allows users to create and modify images using GPT-4o, as a significant step toward making image creation a core part of AI-driven communication.
As part of the rollout, OpenAI showcased a sample image demonstrating improved text accuracy in AI-generated visuals compared to previous models.
