The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to adopt fair, transparent, and accountable practices in their interactions with consumers.

This appeal was made during a three-day consumer engagement forum in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, organized in collaboration with the Sango/Ota Area Community Development Committee (SACDC).

Representing FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Mr. Tunji Bello, Mrs. Bridget Etim from the Ibadan office underscored the Commission’s commitment to bridging the communication gap between consumers and service providers.

Held under Sections 17, 127, 130, and 151 of the FCCPA 2018, the forum aimed to address pressing issues in the electricity sector, including billing inaccuracies, lack of metering, and outdated infrastructure. “Electricity powers homes, businesses, and national development yet the sector continues to face significant challenges,” Etim said.

She highlighted the importance of the forum as an avenue for consumers to understand their rights and seek redress directly from representatives of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) present at the event.

“This initiative demonstrates the FCCPC’s mission to provide accessible, effective consumer protection and promote ethical business practices,” Etim added.

Chairman of the Ado-Odo Ota Zonal CDC, Prince Olatunji Onaolapo, welcomed the initiative, noting that electricity concerns have long plagued the community. “We hope this marks a turning point,” he said.

The FCCPC’s continued advocacy reflects its broader efforts to improve service standards in the power sector through consumer-centered dialogue and collaboration.
