Tragedy struck at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Thursday morning as a ferry conveying 19 passengers caught fire, leaving four passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

 

The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 am aboard the LAGFERRY vessel, “Igbega Eko,” which was en route to Victoria Island.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely thanks to the swift response of the Lagos State Waterways Authority’s (LASWA) emergency response team.

 

According to LASWA, the cause of the fire is still unknown and is currently under investigation.

The authority has assured the public that safety remains their top priority and that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

 

In a statement, LASWA said, “We are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways.

Ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled, and we encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying our waterways.”

 

The injured passengers are currently receiving medical attention, and LASWA has promised to provide further updates as investigations progress.
