The Federal Government has inaugurated a special committee to investigate and address the root causes of frequent road accidents involving trailers and tankers on Nigeria’s highways.
Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, made the announcement on Monday, April 28, 2025, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the ministry’s conference room in Abuja. The move marks a major push toward enhancing road safety and safeguarding lives and property across the country.
“The committee’s main objective is to analyze and provide comprehensive recommendations to tackle the persistent and tragic road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles,” Alkali said. “We must prioritize actionable and lasting solutions to stop these avoidable incidents.”
He emphasized that improving transport safety remains a key element of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s development agenda, noting that each accident represents not just numbers but real human loss and suffering. The committee has been tasked with delivering its findings and proposals within one week.
As part of its mandate, the committee will also consider the establishment of mandatory training and certification programs for all trailer and tanker drivers nationwide to ensure adherence to safety and professionalism.
The committee includes representatives from key transport and safety stakeholders: the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Driving School Association of Nigeria (DSAN), Female Drivers Association (FDA), Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), and the Institute of Driving Inspectors of Nigeria (IDIN).
In a goodwill message, Janet McDickson, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Transportation, expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to promote greater discipline, safety awareness, and professionalism among operators of heavy-duty vehicles.
The Federal Government has called on all relevant stakeholders to fully support the committee’s efforts, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action to ensure safer highways for all Nigerians.
