The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that he established Radio Biafra to promote truth, peace, and fundamental human rights.

The statement was made in a video recording of Kanu’s interrogation by the Department of State Services (DSS), which was played in open court on Tuesday during his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.

Kanu was re-arraigned on March 21 before Justice James Omotosho. At Tuesday’s hearing, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo informed the court of an ex parte application filed on April 10, seeking witness protection for state security personnel. The request was granted, as the defence, led by Kanu Agabi, raised no objection.

The first prosecution witness, identified only as “AAA” for security reasons, testified that he was part of the DSS team that arrested Kanu on October 15, 2015, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos. According to the witness, broadcasting equipment was found and confiscated during the arrest.

In the recorded interrogation, Kanu admitted to establishing Radio Biafra, which he said was legally registered in the United Kingdom. However, he acknowledged that broadcasting in Nigeria without registering with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) was illegal. He also stated that the station was funded by supporters worldwide, and that he submits financial records to the UK authorities.

Kanu further claimed he was interrogated without legal representation, contrary to legal provisions. All materials referenced in the testimony were admitted as evidence.
