The defeat came after a disappointing display from Xabi Alonso’s side, who struggled to create clear-cut chances against a Sunderland team determined to secure all three points.
Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey proved a major threat to Chelsea’s defence, putting Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill under pressure with his physical presence and attacking runs.

His efforts paid off in the 36th minute when he outmuscled Colwill to win a penalty. Enzo Le Fée stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give the hosts the lead.

Chelsea had earlier appealed for a penalty after Cole Palmer went down following a challenge near the edge of Sunderland’s penalty area, but VAR ruled that no foul had occurred.
Despite falling behind, Chelsea struggled to respond, creating few meaningful opportunities to trouble the hosts. Their attacking efforts remained largely ineffective, while Sunderland looked more likely to extend their advantage.
Substitute Wilson Isidor came close to making it 2-0 in the second half, but Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders produced an important save to keep his side in the contest.
Chelsea’s late efforts also failed to produce an equaliser, leaving them to suffer another frustrating defeat.
The victory lifts Sunderland off the bottom of the Premier League table and eases the pressure on manager Regis Le Bris, while Chelsea drop out of the top four as their inconsistent form continues.
