The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, has revealed that he had never met Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu before his selection as the 46th Alaafin.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving service at the Anglican Cathedral Church in Oyo town, Oba Owoade underscored that his ascension to the throne was entirely the result of divine intervention, not political connections.
“I had no prior relationship with Governor Seyi Makinde or Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, either before or during the process of becoming the Alaafin,” the monarch stated. “I did not seek to be the Alaafin; it was God’s will, not my personal ambition,” he added.
In a statement from his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch also called for unity and collaboration among the people, emphasizing the need to work together for peace and prosperity.
“Together, we are strong; divided, we fall. By standing united, we will achieve great things and avoid unnecessary divisions,” he said.
Oba Owoade reaffirmed his commitment to ethical leadership, transparency, and creating a safe environment for the people of Oyo. During the service, Rev. Supo Ayokunle, former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), delivered a powerful sermon, encouraging the new Alaafin to remain courageous and seek divine guidance throughout his reign.
Rev. Ayokunle likened Oba Owoade’s journey to that of King David in the Bible, stressing the importance of justice, peace, and development for Oyo and the Yoruba community as a whole.
“You are not alone on the throne, Kabiyesi,” he remarked. “Remain steadfast, trust in God, and He will guide you through any challenges.”
The service was attended by Oba Owoade’s wife, Abiwunmi, members of the Oyo Traditional Council, and other distinguished guests. A special Holy Bible was presented to the monarch as part of the ceremony.
Oba Owoade formally received the staff of office from Governor Makinde on January 13, 2025, and completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on March 29.
