Dieko Afolayan, the 19-year-old son of acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, has responded to the online backlash regarding his sexuality.
The controversy erupted after Dieko attended the premiere of his father’s latest film, Recall, where his fashion choices and overall demeanor sparked a wave of debate on social media.
While some questioned his sexuality, others accused him of being influenced by Western views on gender identity.
Despite the criticism, Dieko received support from many online, with some condemning the backlash as cyberbullying and unjustified hate.
Addressing the controversy directly, Dieko emphasized his commitment to being true to himself and embracing self-expression in a world that often pressures people to fit into specific molds.

Standing firm, Dieko described himself as “ambitious and hardworking,” with a strong sense of self. “I’m 19, an influencer, creator, and entrepreneur. I come from a family of stars, but I’m also someone figuring out my place in a world that doesn’t always accept me and constantly pushes me to conform to its expectations. It’s frustrating,” he shared.
Dieko also expressed his aspiration to be a role model for both boys and girls. “Honestly, most of my role models are women. I’m unapologetic about who I am and hold firm to my values and standards,” he concluded.
